Very candid but at times feels like a tricky read purely for the amount of sadness all at once. The jumping around of time frames was also hard to keep up with.

Deciding to love yourself was the whole point of this book.  All the ups and downs of life, the self discovery of a trans person.  The pain of being trans and living in a world not built for trans people.

While some of the pacing was a bit awkward and the timeline was difficult to follow but I ended up loving listening to this; especially since the author was also the narrator.

I learned a lot about this author and I’m so happy that he was in a place to write this book and share it with the world.  I also liked how he mentioned several times about his privilege in a very genuine way, actually acknowledging the problems with trans healthcare and other issues as well.

I’m in my memoir era and this is such a good one. He does such a good job articulating the struggles of coming to terms with your sexuality and gender along with how overlapping and intertwined they can be. It is really inspiring to read about the journey he went through and how it took a long time to come to terms with who he is. A lot of people struggle with this well into their life and it was refreshing to read about someone going through this in adulthood. I also really liked how he started the book by saying every queer person’s experience is different and there is no one size fits all story. It was a very comforting read.

My ONLY critique of this and it is a totally personal thing, is that when I read memoirs I struggle to keep up if they are not in chronological order.

HOWEVER, Elliot is beautiful articulate in his life story and everything that lead him to be where he is today.
I would really recommend this, especially the audiobook!
