I was reluctant to read this because I thought it would be about intentional weight loss (spoiler: it is) which I find boring to read about. I tried it because various thin friends of mine insisted that it was very body positive (they’re wrong)
I didn’t like:
Violet getting humiliated at a workout boot camp (twice)
Grant evaluating Violet’s fitness level just by looking at a photo of her and seeing she was fat.
Violet constantly talking about her weight loss goals and how horrible she was for eating frozen yogurt and bbq pork.
The cognitive dissonance of Grant agreeing with Violet’s weight loss goals while thinking she was hot
All the healthism
I liked:
Violet and Grant being excellent at their respective jobs
The banter
Grant’s sex positive friends/colleagues
The instalove which is actually totally believable, partly because
Grant is given a lot of layers
I found selfish Faye’s complicated friendship with Violet messy and real and filled with the kind of meanness that often happens in friendships of convenience between fat and thin women, or white women and BIPOC. I wanted to like it, but I was mad there was zero accountability for Faye.
I do think this would be a good companion read for someone starting a new diet because that was such a big focus of the book.
