When it started out I wasn’t sure I was going to like it as much as the first one. But boy was I wrong! It was so much better than the first!

This was such an excellent sequel to The Rise of Kyoshi. The story was a bit less broad in this book, but I really enjoyed how Kyoshi's development as an Avatar and an individual was challenged. I felt that the story left me a bit wanting at the end, perhaps only because there is no such thing as enough Kyoshi content. We learn a lot about Kyoshi's past lives, and we begin to see how the story we already know will start to unfold in the next few centuries. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Dawn of Yangchen.

This book was a really good and solid sequel to the first one. I think it added a lot to Kyoshi but also her companions. I do miss the Flying Opera Company, but they’re appearance at the end was so satisfying! The revelations and plot twists kept me hooked, despite this being my second time reading it. Overall, this duology was a great way to expand the avatar universe and show other avatars’ experiences.

It’s a good follow up to the first book. It was a fun read, has some good stuff to say about self-image, deciding your future, and acknowledging imperfections in yourself and others as a necessary step forward, presented through a new framework of political corruption to develop the world of the first book.

I was less into this sequel than the original, maybe because of the politics.
The ending was also too perfect in many ways. I still have issues with the writer being a man, but I would’ve loved to see Kiyoshi’s queerness more explicitly explored.
