For the first time, I find myself wishing the "Plot- or character-driven?" question was one of the ones with an "It's complicated" option. These stories are not driven by plot or character, they run on vibes and fun moments - one of them has a seven-year-old credited as the co-author, and it isn't noticeably weirder than the stories that don't. I don't doubt the people who gave it five stars, because I'm sure it's awesome if you're in tune with the vibes, but for myself I enjoyed some of the moments but the only story I really liked as a story was "Abu Gung and the Beanstalk", which has the closest thing to an actual plot.

I laughed out loud throughout this book and enjoyed re-reading it aloud to my partner as a bedtime story. Definitely one I'd like to keep on hand, and I'm now far more eager to read through Mignola's other works.

First time reading this in forever. Some of my favorite Mignola art. I actually like the short stories more.

What a fantastic little group of stories. Mignola is at his best with folktales, and these flourish as stand-alone stories, outside of the shadow of the Hellboy monomyth. Mignola's art is perfect as always, and if there's any negative to this book it's that it makes me miss his art for Hellboy that much more.

Loved it to death my second read-through. I think Hellboy Library Edition Vol. 2 tops it as the perfect comic anthology, but, wow.

It's the best comic anthology I can think of, done by one of the best comic-makers ever.

I just wish there was more.

It's very hard to describe this graphic novel. It's very dark, gothic and has a definite pulpy adventure story feel. Screw-On Head works for President Lincoln, as an agent dealing with strange and occult objects. The art by Mike Mignola is dark and very gothic in style.
