I haven't read this book since I was 11 but it still pops into my head every now and then (except I always remember it as The Creepies for some reason, and then I have to Google "weird creatures in backyard + eyeball cover"). This is one of the few books that scared me when I was a wee lass, and I feel like I need to re-read it.

When Doug and his family move to a deserted farm house so his father can study fungus, they discover many of the surrounding logging camps have been vandalized and locals have lost arms, legs, eyes, and other limbs. At first he doesn't believe the stories about "the beasties", but then he and his sister are lured below ground and find themselves embroiled in a war between the humans and the "beasties". Another of Sleator's horror tales for children.

I read this as a kid, and just reread it today. It was..... not as good as I remembered. it's def more of a kids book. Not bad, but not great either.
