The characters and plot of this book are quite messy, but it was beautifully written and very honest. The story had so many layers, between the main characters’ struggles with addiction, her identity, her family, and her love life. Each layer and the ways that they intertwined were treated with great care.

Not your typical story about Jewish ancestral trauma! A good reminder that it’s born fair or helpful to paint it all with one brush. Came for the Moldovan Jewish representation, stayed for the squirrel candies, sour cherry varenkiki, mamaliga, and iguana, and Suboxone rep!

This book is too sleazy for me, as I get older I don’t have an interest in this kind of stuff anymore. It was just wayyy too much. The plot is also def misleading, it seemed more like a thriller but the book really has nothing to do with her missing sister besides the fact that the MC grows from it.

More to come later but my initial thoughts after just finishing moments ago:

I was engrossed by this story of addiction, sobriety, and healing. In each of those things, the author layered more. Addiction to the obvious (drugs) and also to people. Addiction to those toxic and those healing. Sobriety from all of that. Healing on a personal level from childhood and adult traumas while at that same time healing from cultural and societal traumas. Or at least trying to and finding a way to navigate through them to a kind of broken peace.
