The prose was so sharp and the unnamed narrator was complex and believable. And the way intergenerational trauma was dealt with was interesting. The pacing was a bit uneven for me. The first half really flowed and the second half wasn't as tight. As an aside, I don't think I'm super into coming of age story lines.

Shoah grief (the grief one feels from trauma inflicted on ancestors) was an interesting idea. The last 15 pages rescued this from being 3 stars because it brought a number of things together-the sister, the future, the independence.

Interesting in its work with Eastern Europeans, which is not a group I typically encounter in literature.

More to come later but my initial thoughts after just finishing moments ago:

I was engrossed by this story of addiction, sobriety, and healing. In each of those things, the author layered more. Addiction to the obvious (drugs) and also to people. Addiction to those toxic and those healing. Sobriety from all of that. Healing on a personal level from childhood and adult traumas while at that same time healing from cultural and societal traumas. Or at least trying to and finding a way to navigate through them to a kind of broken peace.
