Such a strange story! Oddly (appropriately) enjoyable.

This book is literary fiction + scifi (dystopia) + psychological suspense. If you like reading about flawed, messy, morally grey characters making hard choices and experiencing dream-like oddities, this is a book for you! The writing is lush and complex, and the food descriptions are mouth-watering. The protagonist is bisexual (doesn't use that, or any, self-identifying term, but they describe being with partners of various genders). It ends
on a hopeful note that I wasn't expecting
.

I read this to kick off my year of catching up on great 2023 scifi releases, as well as for Torches & Pitchforks (theme: red flag relationships).

I was excited going into this cause I thought it was a pretty interesting premise, but I found it very disappointing. It feels like it’s building towards a theme or message, but the experiences of the main character are never meaningfully dissected, or reflected upon. The ending is especially bad, but overall, it’s just messy.

This short big runs deep and wide. It’s a lot of things… Dystopia, Socio-political commentary, Satire, Gastro Horror, Loss of a Mother story, and a cautionary tale regarding climate collapse, how we change food and food changes us and change is inevitable.

while parts of this were beautifully/vividly written, i don’t think the style was for me.

i didn’t like the flashback format and the constant metaphors went over my head sometimes. i didn’t find the romance compelling or believable (which made the epilogue chapter feel off). the themes were somehow repetitive and hard to discern at the same time.

while the descriptions of food were lush, the writing overall was too literary for my taste
