I probably would have liked this more if I had a little one with me while reading it.  As an adult, it was just okay.

A perfectly silly, immensely fun, clever and playful book full of stories I thought I loved before but had no idea. The best antidote to do much seriousness.

If it was possible to give something no stars, this collection of short stories would receive it. Ugh! Complete and utter crap. The retellings are unimaginative, the dialogue stilted and bland and too often stereo-typical - especially in the way Maguire reads them. Utterly awful and not worth even two seconds of reading or listening time. I attempted to listen to this on Audiobook. I made it through two and a half stories before running screaming away from the thing.

This was a cute and fun collection of classic fairy tales. Gregory took some of the most loved tales and rewove them in hilarious stories. From Sleeping Beauty which became Leaping Beauty, to The 3 Little Pigs which became the 3 Little Penguins and the Big Bad Walrus, this book was a ton of fun to read. Definitely a fun light read.

These animal-based retellings of fairy tales were very cute. If the boys were still toddlers, I'd have read these stories out loud to them (after having read them the traditional fairy tales for context).

Gregory Maguire:
As a reader, I beg of you to write books like this one instead of the way you have been. Books like Wicked feel like you are trying to hard to be impressive, but in dealing with fairy tales, thinking of an outside the box is great, but only if you don't lose the necessary whimsy. This book of short stories not only follows the importance of this rule, but truly embraces it. Sigh. A perfect of example of how good a story can become when one develops it in a natural fun way instead of trying to seem lofty.

This was really hit or miss for me. A few of them were really cute (I liked Cinderellaphant and Little Robin Hood), but a few were pretty much the normal fairytales but with different animals? I really liked how Maguire infused his quiet humor, but some of the jokes just didn't land for me. *shrug* I'm sure kids would like it.
