Refreshing, long, and reminded me of how romantic de Bernières is.
Everyone comes out good in the end.
I had some sense of the horror of World War I - shells, bullets, mud, the cold, the dead all around, the enemy not so far away that you can’t yell out an occasional question. But all this, in the book, is not just waste but waste people believe in; proving grounds for heroic action; opportunity for beauty, in the star shells, the stunting airplanes, the camaraderie with fellow soldiers from other walks of life.

I enjoyed Hamilton McCosh’s kindness. The everyday diaristic nature of most events. The family irritations and dramas.
