Really interesting info and a cool past/present split like Maus has, but I struggled to distinguish the characters in the past narrative.

The back of the book billed this as "the Spanish Maus" which I think is a fair comparison. It's the oral history of a Spanish soldier presented in graphic memoir format. He escapes Franco's reign in Spain to fight in northern Africa and then in France. I feel like it's important to capture these primary source histories before that whole generation dies, and this book does a great job of telling his story.

This was great & I highly recommend it!

With all that is going on in the current political climate of the US it especially resonates & it's hard to believe it was originally released in 2013 & in English in 2018.

I leave you with this quote:
"No one knows until the moment arrives. For me, I had to do it. The moment was there, & fighting against fascism seemed to me as necessary as breathing."

RIP Willem Van Spronsen
