Saga is such a sweetheart, she's terrified of magic after what it did to her parents but has a destiny which very much involves her doing lots of magic! Her friendship with her bear is so lovely to read, reminds me a bit of the daemons in His Dark Materials, they are so close.
A gripping adventure through amazing snow-covered places.

“Saga had been just five.

She remembered hearing screams and hiding under the table as her parents turned to the runes to defend the village. The magic of the runes tore through their longhouse with a great ice-bright whoosh, splintering the wooden walls and turning little Saga’s hair silver.”

This is a tale set against the Northern Lights, of a girl named Saga who lost her parents to magic, and who now refuses to use it.

Upset with her afi, or grandfather, for insisting it’s time she learned her rune magic — Saga inadvertently lets in trolls into her village.

The only way to save afi and her village is to compete in the Fifth Winter Games and win the horn of magic, filled with ice crystals.

Saga, and her new friends Ruvsa and Canute, compete in the games but in their exploration of the games venue, they discover much more of the sorcerers who live in the ice castles, harnessing magic from the northern lights.

“She will hold the fate of the north in her hands.”

These had all the elements of imaginative magic, friendship, twists encapsulated in Norse mythology and a guardian of a bear called Bjorn.
