I have been using this book all semester as the textbook for my feminist theory class.

It is a good basic overview introduction to major feminist theories. Each chapter addresses a different feminist theory. Each chapter includes a discussion of key ideas, central theorists, critiques and discussion questions. The book is largely understandable but for jargon-filled theories like psychoanalytic and existential feminism students still found it slightly confusing.

The book could have included more on chronology. Although Tong addresses first, second and third wave feminism there is no discussion of the history or context of feminist thought.

Another major criticism is the focus of Tong on white, Eurocentric feminism. There were a couple of chapters that focused on women of color feminisms but it did not feel like it was enough. I used Colonize This! Women of Color on Today’s feminism to try and balance this out but I wish that there was a text book that adequately incorporated BIPOC feminists into every theory. The book included no discussion of womanism and very few theorists from outside the US or Europe.

I liked the structure of the book with discussion questions and explanations but I wanted it to be more inclusive of non-Western and BIPOC feminist voices.

Would recommend but would also appreciate any textbook recommendations that fit my needs!

This is a wonderfully-written, hard to read, engaging and highly informative book about the many different schools of thought in feminism. The 2015 edition is updated and a lot better than the previous editions. It took me (and our women studies book club) four months to finish but it was so worth it.

* This is a very lazy review and doesn't do this book justice. I'll have to update my review later.
