I read a lot of post apocalyptic fiction and some romance, so this book was a good pick for me. The story takes place a few years after a horrible disease killed most of the human population. A group of people have collected and built themselves a small but functioning society, but are threatened by other groups that are not so friendly. Not surprisingly, there’s some good action int this book.

The story begins when a new group of survivors approaches the camp. A romance starts to bloom between Addy, a current resident and newcomer Jesse. Things moved along faster than I expected between them, but I did like the pairing of these two characters. They are both strong in their own ways to begin with, and brought out even more personality together.

The book was a quick read and I get the feeling that the next book will pick up where this one left off. I can’t wait to jump into the next book and see where things go next!

I received a free ARC copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only, but my review was completely voluntary.

The Reckoning is the 2nd book in the Shelter series, and picks up where The Beginning ended. With threats from a hostile faction, it is time to take the fight to them. Jesse and Addy are at odds after Jesse hid who he really was from her.

This book was packed with action and hard to put down. I liked it even more than the first book! There was a sense of mystery as you wonder who in the group might not be on the same side, and romance too. The book ends with a cliffhanger, so I'll definitely be downloaded it to my kindle to see what happens next!

I really liked the flow of the book as well as the world building that started wit this book, the characters are good and I like how they are developing so you get to know them over time and really see their characteristics and personality come through. Addison is great and I can't wait to see where things go from here as she isn't just some silly woman she has strength to her.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I liked this story.
Addy is the main character in the story. There are a lot of other secondary characters but Jesse is the Hero.
The story is told mainly from Addy's POV but we do get odd glimpses from Jesse.
The author has built a whole world around mankind facing extinction from a flu like virus, followed by other problems that mean Addy is a member of a camp of survivors.
There is a lot of mystery and intrigue, we don't know much about Addy's past, she is not very social and there are hints at the history to that.
Jesse is a bit mysterious, he and his 'men' have arrived at the camp but it is not clear of his intentions or motives.
Addy is a strong heroine but she does have a vulnerability though in the world they are living in it is hard to show it.
There is not much violence for an end of the world book, no zombies etc, but there are people they meet who are not part of the camp who can pose a danger.
The book end on a bit of a cliffhanger, each book would need to be read in order to complete the story.
I did find the story a bit slow, I think it can be a problem with a trilogy but also the first book has to set up the series so it must be hard to get it quite right.

Book 2 in the trilogy.
First of all you need to read book 1 before this one as the events follow on directly from book 1's ending. And this book ends on a cliffhanger, really not knowing what will happen next.
There was a lot going on.
Jesse has revealed his motives and he and Addy have fallen out.
She doesn't trust easily and now feels betrayed.
Its quite exciting, there are events going on in different locations so the reader changes POV a few times.
Jesse is totally devoted to Addy, it's really sweet, how this big strong guy has fallen.
There is ex drama, though no intimacy between anyone other than the Hero and heroine.
No cheating.
The ex drama adds a bit of humour as it's fun to watch Jesse squirm.
It ended and I moved straight in to book 3 as I needed to find out what will happen.

The cover grabbed my attention and the setting drew me in but I really fell for the characters. Addy is tough and resourceful but struggles to form relationships and sets herself apart. Jesse is a sweetheart, I was head over heels for him.

It's a romance book but the background of the post-apocalyptic future where most of humanity has been killed off by flu is given the attention it needs to feel real. There is an interesting story and the author doesn't ignore that in favour of the romance plot. There's a nice balance between the two.

I felt it ended very abruptly, almost in the middle of a scene. It's not an overly long book so I'm not sure why it's been cut off like this in favour of starting a new one. Saying that though, I instantly downloaded the next book to carry on reading!

A very enjoyable read, I liked the romance and the sci-fi sides equally. I'm already on with the next book in the series!

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
