This is a story set in Senegal about a little girl who wants to wear braids like the older girls.

While I didn't quite understand why the braids she requested didn't happen, the book was still lovely.

Bintou is upset because all the older girls and women in her village have beautiful long braids with colorful beads. Whenever Bintou asks for braids in her hair, she is always told she is too young and will have to wait. When other villagers are in trouble, and Bintou is the perfect size to help, she finally realizes that she's just perfect from head to toe.
