Where do I start? I loved this book so much! The characters, the plot, the everything!

Lorelei/Lor ~ I absolutely adored Lorelei, I loved how stubborn she was. When she wanted something she wasn't afraid to go after it. What she lacked in height she definitely made up for with her feisty personality! I really hated how everyone tried to keep things from her. I feel like everything they kept from her was who she truly was yet no one thought it was appropriate to tell her about anything. Even though she had no clue what was going on or why her world turned upside down after she met Jared she still pushed forward and found the answers she wanted and needed to know. I also love how she didn't put up with any of Cameron and Jared's crap. They're literally giants compared to her but she some how got them to behave, funniest thing ever! Boys, I would be scared of her shine kicks if I were you.

Jared ~ Oh, Jared. Let me love you and your swoon worthy self. I honestly can't say too much about Jared without giving things away but I will say I really did enjoy Jared as a character and it wasn't just because he's drop dead sexy! Even though he definitely has some issues, for lack of better wording, he was a really sweet guy and I loved the relationship he had with Lorelei. I'm so excited to see what's going to happen to him in the next book and I can't wait to see how Lorelei and Jared's relationship develops.

Cameron ~ Cameron, Cameron, Cameron. Oh how I loved him even though he could be a big jerk. I felt so bad for him, he's like this tough rugged guy on the outside but on the inside he's truly just a lost little boy. I wanted to crawl into the book and hug him so many times or just tell him everything would be okay. I loved how he was towards Brooke. I hope they get a happy ever after because they're so perfect for each other. I think she's sort of like his calm, she's perfect to keep him grounded and help him keep it together. So I'm also really excited to see where their relationship goes in the next book.

Brooke/Brooklyn ~ Brooke is one of Lorelei's bestfriend and she is such a great one! She is always there for Lorelei throughout the book and even when Lorelei asks if she can help with something that's really sketchy she doesn't hesitate to help in anyway she can. She's also hilarious and has a sassy attitude that went perfect with Lorelei's! I love how she always picked on Glitch, the third of the three musketeers. I also love how instead of her just having the hots for Cameron in the book she truly cared about him. It's so cute how the two bestfriends had it for the two bad boys.

Glitch/Casey ~ I loved Glitch so much. I think I laughed the most when he was talking. He is hilarious and also one of the greatest best friends ever. Even when he had his doubts about what Lorelei said he didn't hesitate to help her any way he could, just like Brooke. Whenever he had his little 'nerd' moments I cracked up, he was just a really cute likable character.

Lorelei's Grandparents ~ I adored Lorelei's Grandma and Grandpa so much. I love how they were so willing to trust Lorelei and supported her throughout the book even when they didn't really know what was going on. I didn't like how they kept things from her past a secret but I know it was out of love and they only wanted what's best for her.

After about getting 3/4 into this book I honestly thought I had figured out what was going on and who was who but I was completely wrong and I loved that. I was really afraid that this was going to be really similar to the Fallen series by Lauren Kate and I'm really happy it wasn't. Darynda took elements that are used a lot in YA today and made it her own! I definitely recommend you all read this book when it comes out. I'm really excited for the next book in the trilogy to come out.

I really wanted to like this but it read like a rough draft. Not even close to Charley Davidson level. There was no humor and the plot was all over the place. It could have used about100 pages of details in between.

As I was reading . . .

I don't think I like how the main character gets all weak-kneed and swoony-eyed when she sees Jared - I absolutely hate when a character is described as perfect. I'm cringing at her actions. Anyways, the story's interesting so far.

As I was reading . . . (continued)

Well I'm more than halfway through with this book. The swooning over Jared still pisses me off. There are some other things that piss me off like how the story doesn't flow very seamlessly - at times, it's oddly choppy or the characters' actions are weird for given situation - and the characters' personalities feel inconsistent.

Okay, done reading.
Feels more like a 2.5 stars instead of a 3.
It was okay. I don't think I will continue with the series.

I honestly didn't even bother to finish this book 100% of the way through. I still had about a chapter left to go, and was like...why am I bothering anymore? It's unfortunately just another cookie-cutter crap-YA romance where the characters feelings for each other are far too "powerful" for the ages; and of course one of them is an epic being of ageless propotion. Don't get me wrong: I love Darynda Jones' adult series, but...YA romance is not her forte and I will not be reading the remainder of this series.

I much prefer Darynda Jones' adult books. The author's typically strong characters are watered down considerably, while the romance, witty dialgoue, and plot dynamics were blown way over the top.
I wonder if authors like Ms. Jones are doing our young women a disservice by creating these magically romantic "true, deep love at first sight" type of novels. A little realism would help these supernatural novels greatly. Additionally, I'm getting more than tired that an entire generation of teen fiction heroines keep being attracted to potentially sinister and threatening males. Sure, the plot sooner or later reveals these boys to be harmless or good, or the heroine experiences a change of heart and goes after the nice boy. But are these books hurting our teenage girls by teaching them to ignore their instincts in hope of finding love?
One positive note (which saved this novel from receiving only two stars) is that the main heroine is not trapped in a cliched love triangle. Rather, it is a supporting character who fulfills that role, which is much more enjoyable.

I liked this book. Don’t get me wrong- the tropes are out of control in this book. The blatant leaping over cavernous plot holes and half-assing the multitude of plot points really does this book in.
Take this with a grain of salt, perhaps, because I still love the author and am now honorbound to read the rest of the trilogy. It’s a fluff read and if you just go with that, you’ll make it through.

First of all the cover is all wrong, it makes you think there is a love triangle which is not correct at all. I like blond guys and it might seem stupid but I was disappointed when I realised that the dark haired one was in fact Lorelei's love. stupidity apart I think the book had a very slow start and it got all very juicy towards the end, which makes me want the next book in the series but not madly though.
One very positive thing about this author is that most of her characters had very funny moments, she had me laughing out loud more than once.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Jones. She’s a brilliant story teller and a master in the art of sarcasm. Why it’s taken me a long time to read this book escapes me. Going into this book, I was expecting more of the same. I was expecting Lorelei to be like a teen Charley Davidson: hilarious, sarcastic, and one with a huge personality. I’ll tell you right now that if you’re going to keep the same expectations prior to reading this book, you’ll be in for a disappointment. Lorelei is nothing at all like Charley Davidson. She’s more reserved and a bit on the shy side. Even if they share the same beginnings, their supernatural roles differ.

One of the things that made me wary of this book was the cover. As you know, I detest love triangles. The cover certainly implies something of that sort. Well, rest assured, there’s none. What it has is a couple of boys who are — well, crush-worthy. Only one of them vies for Lor’s attention, which was reciprocated the first time they met. Basically, one is the Angel of Death (a grim reaper of sort) and the other, a niphilim hybrid who has a bone to pick with the Angel of Death. How does Lorelei fit into the all this madness? Well, she’s the last living bloodline of the Prophet, Arabeth. She’s protected by a secret society that she didn’t know of at first. I quite like the mythology here. While it may have echoes of her adult PNR, she’s done her best separate both.

The book was a fast read, addicting, even. Just don’t expect to bust out laughing as you would reading Charley Davidson. The first book was more laying out the foundation for the series, so there wasn’t much of a plot direction to speak of. So much so, that the poltergeist thing near the end looked more like an addendum than an original part of the plot. No matter, I immediately ordered the second and third book soon after reading this.

To be honest, it's not my favorite. But then again, it's Darynda Jones' handiwork and it's the kind of art that grows on you. "Death and the Girl Next Door" wasn't my favorite in the beginning but now that I've went through with it to the end, I'm quite eager for the next book. I suppose this is Darynda's gift: to write lovely works that people grow to like despite them. I love this woman, gosh.

Everyone's been commenting on the characters so I won't go there, picking instead the chemistry of the group. You've got two baddies, both unrepentant and quite likely to have a go at each other with the first occasion they get. Just the tension between those two makes it worthwhile. But then add the trio of awesomeness and you've got an explosive mix!

Overall, it's a worthwhile read, you just have to keep an open mind. This is Darynda, after all.
