I've read later books from Reichs and it was interesting to see how much her writing has developed since this first Temperance Brennan novel. I found the prose sometimes a little clunky and over stated, but all in all it kept steady suspense throughout and kept me reading. Brennan's idioisms and thoughts were distinctly her, making her a compelling and believable voice as the main character. I also loved the detail of her work as a science geek but could definitely see it being a bit too expositiony for some.

Lovely book. A bit technically but then again the author does the job of the character so that’s to be expected. The French Canadian is a bit difficult to follow at times but still a good book.

Some plot lines were definitely unnecessary, it felt like there were a few loose ends, but still a fun mystery to follow.

Despite high hopes at the time, I just didn't enjoy this book.  I found it dry and dark and violent. Dr. Brennan is an older alcoholic forensics doctor, with a messy divorce and a teenage daughter. I didn't particularly care for the supporting characters either. The concept and setting seemed clever and original at the time, but it ended up not working for me.
