I love Conn Iggulden and picked this up in our library whilst waiting in a queue. It's different and I wouldn't say it's a lovely book but more disturbing. It follows Davey and his weird relationship with both his brother and his wife. His wife brings into his life Denis Tanter who is determined to have Davey's wife all to himself. I didn't see the ending coming quite as it was written and would love to have known how Davey sorted his wife out!

This book was amazing!! I finished this as an audiobook and the story was so good!

The fact that the story starts with the ending then goes into how he ended up in the water to the arriving back at the scene in the end was so good and well thought out. I really liked it which I’m surprised by

The thing that made this a five star is the fact that that twist at the ending was something I did not expect at all! I couldn’t believe it. I actually gasped out loud when it happened so just could not justify giving it any less than a five star.

A wonderful quick read! CHILLING.

A boy who lives in his older brother's shadow soon realises that he may be better off looking out for himself. Their brotherly bond is tested and the trust forever lost.

An impressive short story. I was blown away by the ending and if not for the inherent darkness in their relationship, I quite liked their protective brotherhood.

Not my normal pick (a dark, psychological thriller), but it works well as a really short novella.  Some short stories feel lacking, like they are half finished, but not this - the pace was strong, the characters as fleshed out as they needed to be, and the ending satisfying and not obvious.

I can’t say much without ruining the plot, but we meet the main character Davey, stood in the freezing channel in the middle of the night, contemplating life. From there he takes us on a trip through fear, humiliation, love, loyalty, violence, masculinity, betrayal. It’s a lot. It could easily be read as a emasculation wish-fulfilment trope for the gammons, young and old, out there - which makes me uncomfortable. But it’s also a quick fire, engaging tale that can get you thinking on how pressures can build up, and how the inevitable release valves can look.

First off I have to say that this type of story is not my usual flavour of reading material... just about everything this story presents itself as is way outside my normal hunting grounds when it comes to enjoyable reading.

I NEVER pick up short stories (let alone read them), they're never long enough or have enough information in them for me to really get into the world. Just as I'm getting into the story/characters it ends and that annoys me; leaving me feeling frustrated and angry that there's nothing more.

Also there are no ghouls, ghosts, things that go bump in the night or anything else supernatural which just doesn't do for me normally.

So despite all that all I can say about this book is WOW!! OMG!!! WOW!!!!
(If I could add flashing neon lights to that I would)

This story was everything most (read all) short stories aren't and I just don't have the words to truly express how good this little story was!
