I first read this series in middle school and decided to revisit the tale in between starting new reads. I think The Seventh Tower books, along with Harry Potter, are what really sparked what has become my life long desire to read.

Garth Nix was one of my favourite authors as a teenager. Sabriel still stands out as one of the best books I read growing up. So despite this book being aimed at a much younger audience, I decided to give it a go and I very much enjoyed it.

Nix has real skill at world buidling, and he again excels here. Although the characterisations are understandably juvenile, this sun starved world that had me gripped from the beginning. A favourite scene of mine depicted a board game, which involved creating a monster and watching it battle the opposition. It's touches like this which make Garth Nix head and shoulders above the rest of the young adult crowd.

I can't wait to read the next one!

This is a really interesting fantasy series, a world that has so many secrets to explore. Tal is a chosen of the Orange order. His lives in the Castle which is built into a mountain and is the only place to live in this world. The sun is blocked out by the veil, and the Chosen use Sunstones to illuminate their world, and use the light spectrum to heal, move things, defend and attack. Tal's family is under attack from an unknown foe, his father has disappeared, and his mother is slowly slipping into a coma. Tal has to find a powerful Sunstone so that his family can cross over into the spirit realm and feed his shadow to a powerful being there. When he comes back his shadow will be that creature and be his protector and his way up through the color caste system. From Red to Violet Tal has aspirations to reach the highest order of Violet.

Tal finds himself out of the castle and finds that there are people who live outside in the swirling snow. The Icecarls are a nomadic people who have normal shadows, and use their sunstones to navigate the pitch black world that is outside of the castle. Tal, doesn't know what to think of them since only Underfolk servants of the chosen have normal shadows. Can he get back to the castle to help his family?

This is a great series, the problem is that there is so much to explain, and the first two books are a little slow to start. If the first three books were in a book together I could see this being more popular, but making them into three separate books is what kills the momentum a little bit.
