This memoir of the Japanese internment is much more emotionally complex than I remembered. I first read it as an adolescent many years ago and mostly remembered its descriptions of life at Manzanar. But it is as much about family and growing up and shame and assimilation.

I wasn’t particularly interested in it until the last few chapters that made me shed tears. I feel it’s a good start to anyone wanting to read their first memoir.

There’s no reason this book shouldn’t be studied in tandem with Anne Frank’s diary when you’re learning about World War 2 in middle & high school. This was a well-written, easy to read, firsthand account of what it was like to be at Manzanar, accessible enough that a teenager or almost teenager could certainly read & absorb it.

I’m glad to have read this, & can confidently say it’s a title that I think everyone (especially white Americans) should pick up.

Book needs some improvement but it provides an important lesson all Americans need to be aware of.
