Last of the Miss Marple books I hadn't read! I actually like later Christie (Nemesis is one of my favorites) but this had a weak ending.

A Christie with a gorgeous, vivid setting at an old Edwardian hotel that is too pretty to be true - at least Miss Marple thinks so- and it is when all of a sudden there is a disappearance, a robbery, and a murder! The denouement is confounding and has an even more breathtaking conspiracy than "Murder on the Orient Express" and is another Christie where she writes such compelling and interesting female characters with such fascinating and devious natures to them! 4.5/5 stars!

This book could have been unsettling, compelling, and clever – the sorts of things you expect from the Queen of Crime – but unfortunately, I didn't find it especially well-executed. It starts off well, with an intriguing setup of a well-respected, old-fashioned hotel hiding something sinister, and it's accompanied by Miss Marple's friendly commentary, but once the plot itself takes off, it immediately trips and falls, and just sort of limps along for 250 pages. Miss Marple is barely seen, and the local detective working the case is not an especially interesting character. The plot drags so much, in fact, that by the time I reached the beginning of the climax, I could hardly remember what the mystery was or who was who. Not only was the reveal not much of a surprise, but the motives behind it are watery. This entire book just feels like a shrug. In the end, I just didn't care very much, and I didn't feel like the characters did, either. I wouldn't recommend it among Christie's better works.
