I thought this was a great book!! It was well written and I gave very little to complain about! Sadly, I’m not a fantasy person, and this book did not change that for me. But! That is not the fault of the book, so I feel it’s unfair for me to rate it.
If you like fantasy, royal drama, found family, and talking horses, this is a great read!

Very different from what I expected but I'm not disappointed. The main character goes through a lot of growth and I liked seeing her forming relationships and connections, and accepting her responsibilities to her people. I would have liked more romance but i'm satisfied with the relationship the characters formed. It's friendship, respect, and trust, and love might come of that. I felt it was well handled and it's not something I see often.

This is a deeply captivating book that examines what is family, justice, and identity, all wrapped in a wonderful fantasy world, rich characters, and a sweet romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the main character’s story arc and growth—there’s so much depth there—the pacing is absolutely perfect, and I love the supporting characters, especially Alyrra’s found family.

There are some pretty glaring flaws, though, not least of which is that the first person perspective is so narrow that we don’t get enough information about the prince, the magic he uses or is affected by, to make the ending really impactful. Likewise, more world-building was needed to add weight to the story, and I’m confused by the near complete lack of body dysmorphia despite Alyrra spending 95% of the book in someone else’s body—you’d think that would at least be alarming.

My rating is rounded up for how much I enjoyed my reading experience because, honestly, a perfectly paced book goes a long way—I couldn’t put this down. And this was a great retelling of The Goose Girl, which is one of my favorite fairytales.
