This is an excellent, fairly character based take on Gotham City post-Batman starring older versions of several notable DC characters, obviously leaning toward the Batman corner of the universe but with a few interesting additions as well. It’s quite funny at points but also emotional, as I found myself getting quickly attached to these older aged versions of characters while they pull off “one last heist” basically. It’s an alternate Gotham that feels similar yet different in certain ways compared to the work in the “Batman: White Knight” which some might compare this too. Both Chiang’s work here in “Catwoman: Lonely City” and Sean Murphy’s “Batman:  White Knight” series of books are worth reading for the excellent writing and art respectively. Don’t feel like you have to choose.

I really like the older aged twists on Poison Ivy, Killer Croc and Riddler. The older Two-Face isn’t that different. Barbara Gordon older aged is kind of similar to other older aged depictions of the character.

One the one hand, the art is beautiful, perfect use of colour. On the other, it's so refreshing to read a comic book about a middle aged woman, and one who's still super hot and getting laid as well as having achey knees.

usually im hesitant to read traditional superhero comics, but this was stunning.  This is one of the best image books i've read, right up there with Vision little worse than man/little better than beast

Summary:

What happens to Gotham if Batman dies? What happens to Selina Kyle? In Catwoman: Lonely City, we're about to find out! Ten years after the horrible event, the city is falling apart, Selina is only just released from prison, and things need to change.

The question is, can Selina give up her costumed days? Or will she find a reason to continue doing what she does (used to do) best? Given that she still has one more promise to keep, we all know the likely answer to that question.

Review:

Oh wow. Catwoman: Lonely City is probably one of the better alternate timeline series I've read recently. It's dark and unafraid to play with characters and possibilities – precisely what we need.

Obviously, the whole "what would happen if Batman fell" bit isn't new, but I really enjoyed Cliff Chiang's take on it. Moving the timeline to ten years later was bold, adding a new depth (aging heroes/villains). I also think it was pretty clever, as it helped to make it stand out on its own.

In addition to an interesting plot, the chosen characters and their development were a great choice. Given that this story comes from the same person who brought us Paper Girls, I'm not surprised at the situation's complexity.

All things said and done, I really love the points made during Catwoman: Lonely City. It felt pretty on point for most, if not all, of the characters. And it makes you stop and think about Batman, saving the city, and the right thing to do.

As someone who's nostalgic for the lego Batman games and some movies, this was a fun take on the Batman universe. And of course Catwoman was one of my favorite characters to play as, so I loved that she was the center character. I had some questions about the world n stuff, but I'm also not a DC nerd so maybe some of it just went over my head. And I don't read super hero comics a lot so maybe I'm just not used to that vibe. Because the series is so short, there isn't a lot of time to get attached or to get some character development, but it was still a fun ride.

Comic style art isn't always my favorite, but Chiang did a beautiful job here! Genuinely poster worthy stuff. Catwoman doing action stuff on the city ladscape were my favorite pages to look at.
