The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Read simultaneously with the book James (highly recommend doing this. It’s great visualizing both perspectives at the same time). It’s been since high school since I’ve picked up this book. I enjoyed the adventure a lot more as an adult. I don’t remember much from that time around.

The use of the racist N word here is definitely problematic, in that it’s hard to hear it used so often, and not feel icky the whole time. But it seems that was probably Twain’s point…to show the inhumanity of it all. It does a great job showing all the racial injustices and atrocities that took place in the south. It also, I thought, did a great job showing the revivalism fervor at that time as well, as how humans, as a whole, are a very gullible species. That hasn’t changed.

It was an entertaining read, especially the audio version, read by Elijah Wood (Frodo). Again, read it alongside James, by Percival Everett. Seeing the same general story (with a lot of great new plot twists added), was well worth it.

How is it possible that I never read this book in its entirety until now?! Wonderful, truly briliant novel.

There's not much that I could write that would be new or exciting about this book, so I won't try.

I can add, though, that this audiobook, narrated by Elijah Wood, is 100% worth the listen. Wood does a wonderful job with the dialects, and he is youthful, charming, and the perfect Huck. Although it's a story of the most serious morality play in American history, it's witty and laugh-out-loud funny, too, and Wood captures both moods as well as anything and everything in between.

This is really a good book. I know that you know that, but it's really true.

Not a single braincell between these characters.
Only read this if you enjoy racism and over-privileged children using others for their entertainment.

Zero stars.
