2.5 stars. It was fine but nowhere near as good as the others from the series.

This clearly a set up for the next book in the series, but it works.

Well, hmm. This one got off to such a slow start that it was not going to get above three stars.

Lookit, I'm as techie as they come; I've used punched cards and coded in Assembler; I've been the guy fueled by coffee and soft drinks in an all-nighter. And I read almost nothing but SF/F. I keep up with AI developments etc. So no problem there.

I was also a Hitchhiker's Guide fan. But goldarnit, that came out in 1978, and all the loving references to it here were just plain tiresome.

We're almost a third of the way in before this book starts to feel like a proper RoL story. Things proceed more or less normally after that, although there's too much of the Johnson family, which tells me they are being introduced as regulars.

The plot develops well enough then, with some good twists. It's a relief not to have the tiresome Faceless Man around.

By this point we know how an RoL ends, and we'd be disappointed were it otherwise. But at least this time Nightingale was forced to come close to breaking a sweat.

I suspect this might have been a transitional novel, and we'll be back to full speed in #9.

And now I must wait for book 9... I hate waiting!

Fabulous read. Lots of magic and mayhem and - my favourite - nerd pop culture references. This one is stuffed full with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but there's a very solid and on-point reference to Neuromancer. My nerdly heart is happy.
