this is perhaps the strongest entry i have encountered in the series thus far - the country manor house is just that ample of a ground for crime. martin edwards has truly selected a number of hard-hitters but here are my favourite ones anyways, below:
'the copper beeches' by arthur conan doyle, 'gentlemen and players' by e.w. hornung, 'the well' by w.w. jacobs, 'the manor house mystery' by j.s. fletcher, 'the horrors of staveley grange' by sapper, 'the mystery of horne's corpse' by anthony berkeley, 'the murder at the towers' by e.v. knox, 'an unlocked window' by ethel lina white, and 'weekend at wapentake' by michael gilbert

I didn't love this - the British Crime Library has done well for me previously - but the story selection in this just didn't do what I wanted. I didn't love it but it won't stop me from looking for more in the series. There's a nice Sherlock Holmes, there's a good Margery Allingham and a couple of other good ones, but there's a few duds that I didn't like too.

This collection was tricky for me. It may have been more to do with expectations, but I found several of the stories lacking. It also could be that it started with the best of the lot and things went downhill from there. It was an entertaining read but I was a bit disappointed.

Murder at the Manor is a collection of short stories set away from the bustling city of London and out in the manor homes in the country. Martin Edwards introduces each mystery with a little background on the author, the characters, and the story. There are 16 mysteries in all, many of which were published during the (predominantly British) Golden Age of Murder in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
As always, I really enjoyed this collection that Mr. Edwards put together. The stories all very greatly. Some are classic whodunit, others told from the perspective of the criminal, and one is even a ghost story. I was especially pleased that he included a Sherlock Homes mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle. The common theme that ties them all together is the country setting of the manor house.
Murder at the Manor is a wonderful collection, each story is unique and a fun read. You don’t have to read them all at once, either. It’s a great book to savor, picking it up to read a story here and there. I highly recommend this book, there is a mystery here for everyone.
