Noir mystery filtered through sci fi with a sports backdrop. Checked too many of my boxes to not check out. Between character development, the mystery plot, and sci fi world building, things can feel a little crowded. Michel is game, but juggling genres as a first time novelist is really hard. The parts I liked best were the ones that speculated where the corporate spectacle and pageantry of sports could look like in the future, with delicious hyperbole.

For the first half, the book focuses on the relationship of a star player who was killed on the baseball diamond, and his brother, a scout turned gumshoe trying to put the pieces of the case together. Meaning that the most important character dynamic is defined by absence, for better or worse.

If you ever thought “man, if Blade Runner and Idiocrocacy were combined that would be amazing!” Then you’ll probably love this book!

This was a pretty fun read. I was looking for something a bit different to what I had developed a trend of reading and this was pretty perfect. A murder mystery mixed in with Scifi of buying boy parts. Don't we all look at ourselves and pick out certain aspects we would change if given the chance? This main character can actually do that. With just knowing that knowledge alone, I was intrigued. Beginning this story had me laughing and the more I read, the more intrigued I became. It isn't all humorous, but it is all pretty fun and wonderful.

I enjoyed all the creative ways our future is described. A tale of capitalism doing what it does best, erasing our humanity in the pursuit of consumption. The plot went too slow, although I did really like Kobo and Lila. The characters and this absurd world was a great escape, but could have done a lot better.

Thank you to NetGalley for an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I love the game of baseball, I love Science Fiction and Thrillers are hard to put down. The author builds a pretty unique world and there's definitely a lot of baseball but, for some reason I had a hard time coming back to this one. I'm not sure if it's the writing style or the "Unbelievability" throughout parts of the story.
To keep it short and sweet this one follows our main character Kobo who is trying to figure out what happened to a loved one who passes away very unexpectedly. The best part of this story for me was that Kobo is a pretty badass character in the sense that he felt like a real human. I also liked that the author brought up modern day political issues and used them to fuel the main plot but also did so in a way that isn't annoying. Overall I thought it was okay, I will definitely be giving this author another shot in the future.
