This is one of those books that had such amazing reviews that I was SURE it was going to be good. And I guess that's why I kept reading, because I never really enjoyed it. The story looked at the lives of many different people in a small town in Portugal, and most of the characters were so thinly described that I had trouble knowing which one I was reading about at any given moment, and their interactions were so peripheral that I never really got the point of even trying to bring them together. I'm annoyed with myself that I read it to the end. . .I should have moved on to something I enjoyed more!

I did not love this like I loved her Brick Lane, but it was an interesting premise: one town and multiple stories that occasionally overlap but are often separate. Her writing is beautiful.

this is utter rubbish devoid of flow, narrative, ply or anything that is necessary to create literature. I am worn out reading it

This was just awful. I loved her first novel, Brick Lane, but quite honestly, I just didn't care about the characters of this one. I found it disjointed, I lost sight of the plot - actually there really wasn't one, and in the end after the first 100 pages where I kept trying to figure it out, I just read it to finish it for my SIY challenge. Otherwise I would have dropped it at page 101.

Guess if you're up in the dead of night this is a good book to be in. FInished same way--really like her voice and characterizations--seem hard but true.
