The line between what is informative fact and fiction is well balanced, and is a treat in this book as it is displays the super power and charm of Ozeki’s writing voice. The meld of documentation/research based structure via book format felt very natural and at times fantastical. Gripping. Would you expect a book on meat consumption to be so emotionally charged? i am mesmerised to find everything that made me love a tale for the time being already present in ozeki‘s debut: a search for humanity and compassion, spanning languages, continents, and oceans - all set up against the backdrop of the modern meat industry and its cruel practices.

Oh goodness, this book. It really scooped me up into its world and then threw me into the dirt. In the best way. Was I horrified? Absolutely. Did I just spend 2 hours reading over 150 pages of this book to finish it tonight? Also yes. 

Everything about this book feels like nonfiction wrapped into a fictional account. I half expect the characters in this book to be real, or to find a re run of My American Wife airing somewhere. If I ran into Jane or Akiko I wouldn’t exactly be mad. They felt so whole and fleshed out, in a way that truly did feel like a memoir or a biography. 

As a vegetarian, I can certainly say this book didn’t turn me on to meat, and I wonder if it would turn any meat eaters off of it. While it’s obviously fiction, the accounts feel real and close enough to home (I used to live in cow country Colorado) that it feels entirely plausible. 

On another note I want to devour every Ruth Ozeki book now and I love her forever.

This book. Honestly expect to question your whole life and everything you have ever believed. The story bluntly and satirically plays on the media and its objectification of women. Jane's complex identity contrasting with the factual, documentary-esque writing connects you to the character and all of her hardships. Jane's journey, and her slow realization that she is obligated to portray the truth, builds this idea of having a purpose in life, no matter how late into it. The addition of Akiko blended in with the introduction of the wives, and tied her to their stories from the beginning. Nothing was surprising necessarily, but it was satisfying (not in a way that you expect what's coming). Each plot point and choice beautifully developed the characters and themes.
