There was a very explicit rape scene for which I wish I'd had some warning ahead of time. Otherwise, this was really pretty spectacular. The combination of vivid, occasionally gritty/gruesome stories with a diverse range of characters and lived experiences and the horrific accounts of corruption of the meat industry (glad I was already a vegetarian) made for a compelling, thought-provoking, stunningly authentic-feeling read.

I found this book like tough to read just because of the plot and the things that happen in it. Please look at the trigger warnings before reading this, I didn't. BUT I did like this book. I don't know how to describe it, it was sad and tense and it made me nervous. Ruth is always doing interesting thing
