Insufferable. Reading this was an absolute waste of my eyes. The only way I finished this book is by hoping that something bad will happen to all the characters. Was deeply disappointed. This book should be left in some hidden shelves and forgotten and never read again.

Although as a novel in and of itself perhaps not what i find the most interesting; a women travelling with her husband to a psychology conference - leaving with another man. What spoke to me the most was what makes this a classic and has spoken to a generation of women world wide - that is the discussion of women's sexuality beyond the socialization and expectations and beyond a relationship with a man.

A friend of mine lent this to me and I'm so sad it didn't connect with me as much as I hoped. It reminded me of the TV show Girls in the sense that while it is at times entertaining, the writing and main character are insufferable for the majority of the time. I can definitely see how this was a feminist breakthrough for a certain demographic in the 70s but it does almost nothing for me in 2024. I'd give it a 2.5 but Goodreads is still stuck in the dark ages.

I listened to this one - and it was a rambling mess at times. Even the narrator sounded bored by the constant mind spiraling of the author. The sex stuff seemed stuffed in there just for shock value. There are gems in here- look beyond the “zipless fuck” tirades and there’s great commentary on being a woman without a clear plan in life and the limitations we face. I appreciate the historical significance of this book but if I’d read this in print I’d probably skim through most of it. Oh and Adrian was terrible and I hated him.

I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. So much of it still resonated and I’ve never read anything with quite the same tone- at once funny and fast-paced but also intellectual and self-aware. I want to read it again, as I feel there’s so much more to be uncovered!
