Samantha Lucero’s work is stunning. I was introduced to her through Sudden Denouement and I have been an avid follower ever since. It took me far too long to purchase and read Six Red Seeds and I urge you not to make the same mistake. At least I know ‘good things come to those who wait’ is true.

Lucero finds life in the darkness. In the Introduction to this collection she mentions how often with poetry, you write a piece without always knowing the meaning or message yourself. This is the nature of poetry; it is a deeply emotional genre and relies on its poet knowing and unknowing themselves in equal measure. This tightrope balance is present throughout Six Red Seeds. Lucero has a clear style - dark, vivid and visceral. Each piece elicits a response; whether that be a brief ‘hm’ and nod of your head, or your eyes hungrily devouring every word and image. I did not feel like I was on the outside looking in. I was all the way in and I was heartbroken when the collection ended.

Lucero is beyond talented. She is gifted and she grafts to create art I’m not sure we always deserve. If anything, in a world which appears so dark, to have a writer who can craft such beauty from darkness, it is us who have been gifted.
