3.5 stars. I think I have to rate these differently based on the time. Some parts of me just can't get over how racist they are. It is too easy to figure out "who done it" when every time there is a foreigner they are responsible. Of course if it's a white person they have good reason for the crime they committed. If they aren't, they are, of course, violent savages. Ugh. But I'm glad Sherlock came back...and I'm glad I've read it.

Full disclosure: I read only the first story, "The Adventure of the Empty House," and I only read it for some clue as to how the BBC production will explain the non-death of Sherlock in season 3. No clues were found and I am more committed than ever to flying over the pond to see it when it airs in the UK. This is desperation and it is a common side-effect of a perfect synthesis of literature and film. Consider yourself warned.
As for the story, I was too disappointed by the brevity and lack of oomph in Sherlock's return to the page--it was as if Conan Doyle's reluctance to resurrect the public hero was palpable between the lines--to read anymore at this time.

I am really enjoying these stories. This volume has many, varied tales. "The game's afoot!"
