Sweet

Sweet but not sugary. I really liked watching these two come together and fall in love. Low conflict and angst even though everything isn’t roses.

A quite gentle story, no major angst.
Lost soul Luke meets up again with Mason and it is really all about gentling Luke back into the world and into Mason’s life.

I could hear and taste the State Fair in Kaje's descriptions. I liked Mason better in the book than in the excerpt. Mason and his family were welcoming of Luke. At the end I was happy to see Luke in a job that suited him.

ETA: Luke's personal history hinges on the inadequacy of the American health care system. I wonder how many Minnesota dairy farmers, similar to Luke's family, disdain Obamacare as socialism yet are only one illness away from losing everything.  Does "socialism" seem less bad if it means your livelihood isn't down the toilet?

Luke has gone through a lot, losing his father, his farm and home, and only narrowly escaping a life on the streets. He’s lost hope and I felt quite sad for him. All that loss really impacted him and continues to define him throughout the story. It’s more than a simple background story for the cliché “tormented hero”.
Luckily this is fiction, and Kaje Harper managed to give Luke a way to turn his life around with a little help from his former high school crush, Mason. Although reality intrudes when we are shown that Luke’s farm was no exception and that other dairy farms also struggle to survive, with no miracle to fix their issues.

Luke is physically more imposing than the smaller and more studious Mason, but their relationship doesn’t conform to stereotypes, which I loved! Luke looks to Mason for guidance and help to discover new things, like say make-up. The issue of what it means to be a real “man” is touched upon and handled in the best way. I really liked Luke and Mason as a couple, they are a great fit.

This story has an very realistic feel to it, with a “true story” kind of vibe running through it thanks to the incredibly authentic (not always likable) secondary characters and real life issues that crop up. Even the happy for now ending adds to that feeling.

This is that sweet, terrifically-researched, tough choices m/m romance you're looking for, with the little bossy one loves the big quiet one dynamic and the lovely emotional arc that quiet one has to navigate. Beautiful.

Kaje Harper wrote one of my most favourite MM historical romances - Into Deep Waters - and now she's just added to that with this excellent contemporary new adult romance.

It's surprisingly sexy for a Dreamspinner Press States of Love entry and I loved the care and devotion Mason offered up to Luke as he slowly introduced him to all the many ways two men can be intimate in a relationship without having full penetration.
SpoilerDon't worry, it eventually gets there too and the scene is beautifully done.

This level of care is extended throughout the narrative as two former school friends meet again after life has hammered one of them almost to breaking point.

Both characters also break the often overused stereotypes of 'jock type' and smaller, more femme MC, and I loved seeing Luke just hand over all responsibilities to Mason because he had trust in him to not steer him wrong.

This is just all over a truly sweet romance.
