Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty by Christine Heppermann

This collection of poetry peels away the layers that society convinces girls to wrap themselves in, and gets to the heart of the insecurities and self-image issues that so many teenage girls face. More than that, though, Heppermann invites young women to recognize how pervasive and long-standing many of these societal views are, and to have the courage to rewrite old tales and views with endings that serve us better. Haunting photos from various contributors complement the author's compelling poems.

I loved this because it contained so much criticism (sometimes packaged in great humor) on the way western society tells women/girls how to behave, how to look, what to wear, what products to use to look "beautiful", and how the consumerist society always finds something wrong with women for them which they can only (partly, never completely) fix by buying loads of products. I especially loved "Abercrombie dressing room, "A brief history of feminism", "If tampons were for guys", "First semester haiku" (ESPECIALLY 'virgin math', I think I stopped breathing), "Health class", "Rapunzel", "Nature lesson", "Life among the swans", "Spotless", and "Bird girl". Thanks Michelle for introducing me to the book :)

"But here's a great thing about stories: they can be retold." So says Christine Heppermann in her notes, and that's what I loved so much about reading this. I loved her feminist take on some of the classic tales and tropes. I enjoyed reading all of the poems, but I adored "Sleeping Beauty's Wedding Day," "BFF," "Sweet Nothings," "Vindictive Punctuation," & "Nature's Lesson." Teenage me would have latched onto them as welcome proof that I wasn't the only girl in the world who felt like that.

3 stars mostly for the photography! Without that, would be 2 stars

This wasn't a terrible poetry collection, but it is juvenile even by YA standards. That isn't to say the topics addressed weren't important and there's a heavy emphasis on appearance and weight, but the writing is basic. Speaking of topics, trigger warnings for eating disorders, there were a lot of poems pertaining to that. I did like some of the poems, but I didn't find anything to be original or awe-inspiring. Still, it's a short, quick read and was a good way to pass time. Try it if you like, but there are better collections linking women's issues with fairytales.

The cover for this is absolutely beautiful. I love it.
Everything else. I hated it.

I went into this book expecting whimsical fairy tale type feminist flowing poetry. Instead what i got was this rigid poetry that was too hard to my palate. I did not like it at all.
