Absolutely stunning illustrations.
I love the simple, rhythmic hymn woven throughout.
This book includes true history and historical imagery of the civil rights movements, and is perfect for children of all ages.

It was OK. The pictures were nice, but the song - which translates when it is sung - is not a good one for the text in a picture book. It repeated the same words and phrases over and over, which made you not want to read the words any more. It almost would have been better as a wordless book with the song and the information at the back.

The words of the song with drawings depicting past and present. A good history lesson for all.

A stunning visual interpretation of the beloved song “We Shall Overcome” the that has a young girl walking in the present time past well-known places in African American history.

Collier is such a talented artist, but I found the footprints with faces a little off-putting. (Just me?) I also wish that the sheet music had been added to the end papers, but still altogether lovely.

Try and find a recording of the illustrator (Bryan Collier) talking about how he put the illustrations together and what to look for - there are details you don't want to miss!

Collier's adaptation of the song is stunning. The historical & illustration notes in the backmatter add important context.
