probably not the best book if you're in a place where you can't think about large scale disasters, but a solid read nonetheless. i do wish some of the characters had more of an arc and i also wish henry wasn't a character at all, but i think especially if you're from or have spent significant time in california, this will be a heavy but fulfilling read for you.

REVIEW
Ever read a book that just founds a permanent space in your head, even when you’re not reading, even when you’ve finished it? Over my book nerd years, I found some, and for me, that’s always the sign of a good book! Dry is a part of this list, and you might have already guessed, it was a book I really enjoyed!

Although Dry is categorized as a science fiction and futuristic dystopian novel, I would say that it feels like neither. In fact, the story it tells could very easily happen tomorrow in some part of this world, and that’s maybe the scariest part about it. It’s daunting to imagine that what we’re reading could happen to us at any time!

I would say that although it’s a very accessible novel, as it is destined for young adults, it can probably get under your skin, whatever your age is. I found myself followed by this constant sense that something was wrong. Every time I opened the tap, every time I drank a glass of water, I had the most intrusive thoughts that the water wouldn’t come out, that I should make that glass last. A sign of how much of an immersive experience this book is.

Although maybe peculiar, the characters felt very real to me, and one of my favourite aspects of this book was definitely how the authors explored human nature and how it changes when survival instinct kicks in. I felt like everything was very well done, not being too much considering the audience, but also not too little considering the message that needed to be passed.

Overall, I would say this was a very solid 4-star book, and if I was already curious to read Scythe, now I know I’ve got to do it! If you like dystopias and adventure books, I would definitely recommend this one to you!

Something about this book just didn't click for me. Maybe it's because its about something way to real to have fun reading about. I love me some apocalypse books, but they usually have a sort of magical element. This was to real to be fully enjoyed. To depressing.

I think I would have had a different experience reading this if I had read it before our own generation's disaster time. After the pandemic though it feels though it makes some things much more mild or unrealistic. Like waiting a couple of hours to go to the store. I know now for a fact that if there was even a whisper of any shortage the public would make it a million times worse by preemptively buying it all out.

very good book that focuses on something that could eventually be very real. the main characters are likable, with the exceptions of characters your supposed to hate, and they don't make stupid decisions that make you want to tear your hair out. all main characters go through well-written character arcs. the overall story is well-written and doesn't shoehorn in romance like the Scythe series by these same authors. some plot points do seem to be dropped for no reason other than they'd complicate the story, but it isn't noticeable upon first read.
