This was my first comic anthology and it was nice. The format worked better for some stories more so than others. Usually I fly through graphic novels but the serious nature of the stories made me slow down. Killing and Dying was an especially beautiful story and really stood out to me from the rest of the stories told here. The hortisculpture story is by far the worst one and does not have well developed characters- get past it and the rest are better. I would be interest in this format again, but with stories that were just as emotionally strong as killing and dying. They were good but just not as stand out- still worth the read!

just finished Killing and Dying for book club next month. i didn't enjoy it at first— kept thinking, "what's the point?" but as i kept going, it started to click. Adrian Tomine excavates feelings and realities that people try to avoid. or at least, i try to avoid: failure, ridicule, rage. feelings that make you feel numb and worthless. but Tomine's comic felt like an affirmation. a reminder that it's okay when the world loses it color and you just live day by day. a part of life.

gorgeous artwork, moving stories with complicated, messy, and deeply human characters struggling to make sense of culture, identity, grief, love, and art. love how tomine plays with various forms and styles and uses the medium of comics to portray unreliable narrators.

I picked this book up on a whim. Did not expect the variety and life in these short comics. They are sweet, sad, intense at times.
