This is a lighthearted exploration of what a lot of queer kids have and will go through in the future. Leaving your old life behind to find where you truly belong. To discover yourself, to understand true acceptance amongst a community, and exploring bit by bit who you want to become by the ending chapter in your life's story. Stamper has written something that looks to encourage and affirm young queer people that you weren't able to control the family and life you were born into, but you can definitely choose the life you want to live and the family you want to love. Another great addition to the YA queer modern canon.

This book was enjoyable and a quick read that helped break me out of a reading slump (I finished it in one sitting) however while the story was enjoyable there were aspects of the writing and some coverage of sensitive topics that felt superficial. For example it felt as though the author just googled touristy spots in London and then wrote from that. Furthermore, while some topics like navigating toxic relationships were covered in great depth there were several incidents in the book that seemingly came out of no where such as
eating disorders and an instance where the MC is nearly sexually assaulted
and were then resolved as though they were trivial which felt insincere, unrealistic and tested my suspension of belief (including the fact that the MC has
severe anxiety
but still manages to drop everything and move overseas without a solid plan). Still, the book does a fantastic job of representing lgbt young people, is a wonderful story about found family and was rich in musical knowledge that felt very authentic.

Let’s talk about As Far as You’ll Take Me.

I was so excited to read this one but maybe my expectations were too high and I was left a bit disappointed.

First of all, the plot felt very unrealistic and rushed.

I didn’t really like or felt invested in the characters (besides Sophie).

The diary entries did nothing for me. I felt like they didn’t add anything to advance the plot or to connect with the main character.

I felt that there were some inconsistencies with the main character.
Plus, the subjects of eating disorders and toxic relationship/manipulation, for the most part, were glossed over.

However, I did love Sophie (I would much rather read a book about her) and the discussions of toxic friendships.

I enjoyed this book a lot.   Marty was an interesting character and I really respected the fact that he was brave enough to move to London by himself!!! And travel, and do so many other things! It was really nice to see a character living with chronic anxiety that didn't let it stop him from living his life. Sure there were a lot of things it kept him from doing, but he kept trying and pushing himself and learning and growing. I really enjoyed that.

All of the parts revolving around crash dieting really got to me. Definitely watch out for that if eating disorders are something that triggers you.  There were other aspects of this book that also weren't super fun to read. A lot of the people in Marty's life were really terrible people.

Luckily, he also had some family and new friends that were there for him and helped him out! I love the found family trope and it was heartwarming to find this one.  I also enjoyed the musical aspects!
