4.5

I read this book/series in May 2021 and rated this book 4/5 stars.

I reread this book/series in December 2021 and bumped this book's rating up to 4.5/5. It's better than I remember and I love watching Ty come into his own person and adulthood.

I'm a huge fan of this series. This is the only book from Tyson's perspective, but it's such a good addition to the series. TJ Klune created a wonderful family, with Bear, Otter and The Kid at the center. Being able to read and see the Kid's (though he isn't a kid anymore) perspective really added that something extra to the whole Seafare experience.

Read this series. You won't regret it.

While I enjoyed this book a lot and thought it was a compelling installation in the series, it wasn't my favourite of Klune's books to date. There were a few things I took issue with-- including the low-key demonisation of medication for anxiety (and its subsequent turn into an addiction) with no further talk of other ways to manage anxiety with medication. This is something I find personally troubling, as I believe medication can be used to great effect when used responsibly and in connection with other resources.

The recurring trope of the "the meds turned me into a zombie" in contemporary fiction is one I'd like to see go away. While I know it's not an uncommon occurrence, there are adjustments that can be made and other options, etc and it's something I always wish more books would explore *thoughtfully* rather than moving into "they turned me into a zombie and then I ended up abusing them." Anyway.
