This story is absolutely stunning - but will break your heart a thousand times over in a thousand different ways. I know these characters will stay in my heart for a long time to come.

A slow but aching family story. If you prefer plot based, this is not for you. This book is character based—or really, relationship based. I enjoyed and had my heart broken by how the hardships of childhood drive parenting choices, and the parenting choices can lead to regret anyways. If that makes sense. I’m currently on a journey of discovering how my mothers mothering and my childhood are informing my mothering and my children’s childhoods, so it was heavy and topical for me.
Trigger warnings: miscarriage and opioid abuse (not explicit, but it is there)

Such a beautifully written story. I agree with all the words of praise this book has gotten. I’m so happy to have met one of my new favorite books

December book club

“We pray together and when it is time for us to ask for what our hearts desire, my first wish is that he remain steadfast in faith, and then if he does not, that he never believe that God is a being with a heart like a human's, capable of being small and vindictive.”

Writing and story were great. Book moved somewhat slow but I enjoyed learning about the dynamics and culture of this family and the struggles that many families deal with behind closed doors. Wish the ending would have been happier but enjoyed hearing the final thoughts of the father.

The view into a strict Muslim household was fascinating. Great writing. Too slow of a read for me.
