I had watched the movie first and I didn't enjoy the movie at all. However, when I picked the book up, I really liked and found that it was much better than the movie. The characters have much better depth in the book, especially Jack. In the movie, he came out to be a little maniac from the very beginning but that was not the case with the book Jack. Book Jack has a lot more layers to his character - he is a loving father and husband, genuinely loves his kid and worries for him (which I couldn't perceive in the movie).
Also, the hotel is quite an entity in the book which was something interesting to read about.
The book is definitely quite scary in places but there were places where I felt like the story was dragging just a bit.
