Read this in preparation to giving it to my son for history this year. I really enjoyed it--very solid attempt, well-written and not too difficult to read, despite its being some years old. The treatment of the earlier years of the country's history was a bit brief, but that was to make room for Garrett's EXCELLENT coverage of World War I, the Depression, and World War II. There was a bit of oddness at the very end--some weird discussion about immigrants from different places not being as smart? Don't know what that was about or exactly what he was trying to say. I just ignored it. Overall VERY solid and I am pleased to give it to my son to read.
