Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind

I really liked the concept and thought it unique. However, I wasn’t a big fan of the execution. It was fine, and I figured it was trying to mimic 18th century writing. It just didn’t work for me which is unfortunate because I really thought I would like this. The writing felt a little unfocused, focusing on parts I didn’t care about and skimming the parts I actually wanted to read about. Perhaps this is why I ended up feeling a little disconnected to the story. I loved the parts that focused on Grenouille’s sense of smell, the almost orgasmic intoxication from the smells, but I wish the author could have delved deeper into his psyche instead of endless paragraphs about perfumes or distilling random objects like coins or wood. All these unnecessary paragraphs made the story feel longer than it actually is.

Also, it’s quite obvious that a man wrote this. Something about it using virgin girls just gives me ick.

Well... that was a strange read. I liked the way the story was written, though. This book was about a young perfumer in France in the 18th century, with an exceptional gift for identifying and retaining different scents, and his quest to create the perfect perfume.

Magical realism without it claiming to be as such. Very interesting topic and nice explorations of the main characters' inner workings, if at times a bit repetitive.

This was so incredibly disappointing, although to be fair to the book I think I set myself up for disappointment. I just assumed I would love this book, the interesting premise made me expect beautiful writing and an interesting main character.
Instead I found mediocre writing and the most fantastically uninteresting character ever. What is the point in a character predestined to be evil? He's not human and so it is not interesting when he behaves less than human, books about horrible people doing horrible things can be amazingly engaging, but there was literally no point to this. He's just an evil guy who is truly purely evil for all of his evil life, ok... who cares?
It was at times funny, so i suppose that's nice

The writing style is nice, though there is very little dialogue and that usually bothers me.
CWs: the n word and g word are used in the text!
