I'm torn between wishing they had taken a little bit longer to tell the middle of the story, and being grateful that they condensed this story to make it more intriguing.

While it wouldn't have quite the kick if you read just this volume, and not the ten before it (and the occasional Ninjak book), you Could just read this volume and have as complete a story. It ends on a cliffhanger, so you will have to read volume twelve to figure out what's going on in the last page reveal, but everything up to that is contained within this book.

We begin with the background of the armor, followed by the origin of the antagonist, and then the story picks up from the last volume. But, again, it's very easy to follow even if you haven't read the previous volumes.

If you like science fiction/action stories, or complex alien invasion narratives, Vendetti's run on X-O Manowar is one of the best in recent memory. He also does a splendid job of bringing in other elements of the Valiat Universe without it feeling superfluous.
