Gosh, this was even better the semond time. With its incredible concept, amazing characters and pulse-pounding plot, it's a standout for me. I'm going to pick up the sequel ASAP, and I mean it lol. I'm so worried for these characters... I reread this on a whim and I'm so glad I did. Original review below.

"Why are there so many shadows in the world, Kate? Shouldn't there be just as much light?"
4.5 stars! This was a fabulous book in many ways. The monsters gave me chills, the character arcs were fantastic (though I much prefer August to Kate.) The concept and study of what it means to be a monster or a man was beautiful. I do think there was some pacing issues, like the part that was supposed to be the most action-packed just wasn't as climactic as I wanted to be, there wasn't much build-up and I think that the stakes could've been higher, for Kate at least. However that's only a small thing and I really did love this book, it gave me Fall vibes for sure, it's just that I felt... I felt like it ended too quickly, or wasn't quite paced right in my opinion. Still, it was a wonderful read, I'd highly recommend for Fantasy fans.

The idea of monsters and music was new and I liked the subtle themes weaved throughout the story (human vs monster; what defines a father). The plot itself was predictable and nothing surprised me, but the character development was well done. I doubt I'll continue with the series, but I do recommend for YA readers 12+.

I think Victoria Schwab just became one of my favourite authors. This book is not only unique but has an incredible writing style that's so smooth you don't even notice the change in characters voice. You just know who's point of view you're reading without being confused.
Kate and August are amazing characters and thank God I've found a book where there is no element of romance! YAY!
A very intricate World that can be tricky to understand at first but is like nothing else I've ever read!
Wow.
