I'm pretty sure I read this when I was a kid. I love the concept, but the execution didn't age well. It's got some pretty horrible descriptions of people of color. This is shelved in YA in my library and I think that's appropriate--available to check out for those looking specifically for it, but not readily accessible for those that are too young to understand the racism.

A very charming book about the adventures of a doll.

- I actually liked this Newbery Award winner. It was slow at times, but I liked Hitty and most of her adventures.

- I really liked Hitty's down to earth personality. She was just happy to be around. She didn't mind who played with her or admired her as long as she had an owner who took care of her.

- Hitty was the luckiest doll EVER! I can't believe she survived some of her adventures, especially being tossed into the ocean.

- I liked most of the people that Hitty encountered. Each person was interesting in their own way.

- Not bad for a 1920s book!

So cute - an enchanting story that bring to life the mystery of a doll...where she comes from, where she goes. I want more...what about her next 100 years?

Wavering between 3 and 4 stars, and going with the 4 because this was charming and funny. I liked it much more than I expected.

The plot of this book is interesting and rather fun. It follows Hitty, a small wooden doll through numerous owners and adventures from shipwrecks to concerts to exhibitions and the delight of many young girls as well as women and men. However, it is also a product of its time, so it has some highly problematic content as well. The depiction of the natives of the island is quite offensive in so many ways, and the scenes set on the southern plantation have not aged well. There is also one instance of the N-word used not as an epithet but that doesn't make it less problematic.

I just couldn't get into this one. I had read it as a child and I remember not liking it a lot when I was younger either. The language and storyline were a bit old-fashioned, but I don't usually have a problem with that. This one just didn't work for me.

This is one of my favorite books when I was a child. I remember reading this book when I was 9 or 10, stayed up all night to finish it. It was one of the first books to make me cry. I attribute this book to making me into the avid reader I am today...I have not stopped reading since.
