I really enjoyed learning about Vincent Van Gogh's life! He was so much more than the "crazy artist who cut off his ear". He was a poetic writer, an enthusiastic artist, and a best friend to his brother Theo. His life really was too short, and it's a shame he didn't achieve success while alive- however, I am thankful that he was able to make it after he died, as his paintings truly are a gift to the world!

A good, thorough, relatively quick read. I feel a connection to this poor, tortured soul, and love the use of illustrations. I wish, however, they would have put more of his paintings in chronological order.

Beautifully done, looking at it weeks after reading. Was a bit bored while reading, but I think Jan Greenberg & Sandra Jordan did a masterful job telling his story.

Interesting autobiography--wish it had focused more on his personal life rather than his works, though. Definitely a quick, informative read!

What a remarkable artist! Van Gogh never really saw recognition for his talent, but he might not have liked that anyhow. He said, "Success is the worst thing that can happen in a painter's life." Although he did always believe that his paintings would bring future profit and urged his brother to take good care of them. He sold several drawings, but only one painting during his lifetime.

I've always been interested in Van Gogh. He was my chosen artist for a report many years ago in an art class, but since then I've forgotten many of the details of his life. This book helped me remember many of those details, and I learned a lot of new things, too. I read next to my computer so that I could look up paintings as they were mentioned. There are quite a few included in an inset in the center, but not as many as I wanted to see. He painted so very many paintings in his life!

This was a Sibert Honor winner for 2002.
