I much preferred the first few chapters which read more like a collection of short stories. Thereafter, the magicial realism elements felt more of an afterthought and the men's subplots seemed to exist to bring up the word count. I don't know, I liked most of the individual parts of this book, but I don't think they were necessarily well integrated with one another.

Good! The powers/gifts in this gave both superhero and spiritual at the same time and like the wind as a narrator is so interesting. I didn’t really understand gbessa’s power at first then the last sentence I was like ohhh okay I get it now (metaphor! they’re all metaphors!) never read anything about Liberia before and really just such a unique book

This seems like an excellent book, but just isn't for me right now. It'll stay on my library loans list and I might revisit it sometimes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I found this book a little hard to get into, but I am certainly glad that I persisted. The combination of magic, history, and human struggle was beautiful.
