The story is about three women who become friends before the Nazis take over Paris. Ruth is a Jew and the mother of two children. She makes the decision to send her children away to protect them from the Nazis. Eliza is a U.S. citizen who is married to an up and coming artist. The Nazis kill her husband because of his affiliation with the communist party in Paris. In order to protect her daughter and herself, Eliza leaves her daughter with Juliette. Juliette is a U.S. citizen who is married to a Frenchman. They own a bookstore. When their bookstore is bombed, Juliette and one of her children are the only survivors. She moved back to the U.S.
The majority of the story is about the three women trying to put their lives back together and move forward. Ms. Hamel shows how hard that is to do when you've lost so much. However, that is the problem I had with the book. It takes much too long for the women to move on with their lives. It became somewhat repetitive for me. That is why I only gave this book a 3-star review.
